Pupil Premium
What is Pupil Premium Funding?
Pupil premium is funding to improve education outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in schools in England. Evidence shows that disadvantaged children generally face additional challenges in reaching their potential at school and often do not perform as well as other pupils.
How much funding is available to schools?
In the 2023 to 2024 financial year, schools will receive the following funding for each child registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last 6 years:
- £1035 for pupils in year 7 to year 11
Schools will also receive £2,530 for each pupil identified as having left local-authority care because of 1 of the following:
- adoption
- a special guardianship order
- a child arrangements order
- a residence order
If a pupil has been registered as eligible for free school meals and has also left local-authority care for any of the reasons above, they will attract the £2,530 rate. Children who have been in local-authority care for 1 day or more also attract £2,530 of pupil premium funding.

How do I apply for Pupil Premium funding for my child?
Once the school is aware that a student is in receipt of Pupil Premium funding by the local authority, we will identify where a student is at risk of underachievement and put plans in place to address this in line with the strategies outlined in the documents linked below.
How does the school decide how to spend Pupil Premium funding?
The academy uses a range of strategies to ensure that students have high aspirations and achieve their very best. This begins with high quality teaching and learning. We recognise that high quality teaching and learning alone does not work for all students all of the time. To address this we have become highly successful in identifying and helping students overcome barriers to learning.
Our rationale for our use of Pupil Premium funding is to remove barriers faced by eligible students. Some eligible students are successful without intervention whilst others face many barriers and require significant resources to become engaged in learning. The majority of Pupil Premium funding we spend is therefore aimed at improving student engagement by removing eligible students' barriers to learning. This is the ambition that we reflect upon when planning how to spend the funding each year.
